The fourth Generation of computers which started to appear in the middle of the 1970s and continued in to the 1980s, were distinguished by a number of significant developments:
The creation of microprocessors, which enabled the integration of the whole CPU (Central Processing Unit) on a single chip, was the most important advance. Computers are becoming far more affordable and smaller as a result.
Personal computers (PCs):
The fourth generation saw the emergence of personal computers, such as the IBM PC and Apple II, enabling individuals and small enterprises to access computing more easily.
Operating Systems:
During this time, sophisticated operating systems were created, such as MS-DOS and early iterations of Microsoft Windows, making computers more user-friendly.
Visual User Interfaces (GUIs):
GUIs, such as the one made popular by the Apple Macintosh,
Better Software:
Numerous software applications, including word processors, spreadsheets, and games, became more common and enhanced computer functionality.
Networking:
Local Area Networks (LANs), which enabled computer connections and resource sharing, spread widely and paved the way for the development of the internet.
Storage:
Magnetic disk drives and floppy disks, which offered greater capacity and dependability than prior storage technologies, were widely utilized for data storage.
The fourth Generation, all things considered, signaled a substantial change towards more approachable and user-friendly computing, opening the door for the widespread usage of computers in a variety of settings, including households and businesses.
