The term " third Generation" computer refers to a time in computing history that roughly corresponds to the middle of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. The usage of integrated circuits (ICs) or microchips, which enabled considerable advances in processing power, dependability, and efficiency compared to prior vacuum tube and transistor-based machines, is one of the key features of third-generation computers.
Computers become cheaper, quicker, and smaller throughout this time. The creation of high-level programming languages like COBOL and FORTRAN made it simpler for programmers to create software. Additionally, operating systems started to spread, which facilitated easier computer use.
The IBM System/360 series, which was essential in standardizing computer hardware and software interfaces, and the Apple IIgs are notable examples of third-generation Computers.
